MARKETMEN PUT 12 PAST LONG MELFORD

Needham Market hit 12 unanswered goals, breaking the previous club record victory (10-1 at Ipswich Wanderers, 2007, with the home record previously 8-1 twice - most recently against Hitchin Town in our first Southern League Central Premier Division home game in 2018), to ease through to the Quarter-Finals of the Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup.

Kevin Horlock's side saw Dan Morphew captain the side, with Luke Ingram and Adam Mills also starting. Josh Tomlinson was in action for parent club Northampton Town - against Notts County - while Reggie Lambe was away on international duty, with Dylan Williams returning to the bench.

The Marketmen, who have won the competition in each of the last four seasons, will host Isthmian North Division side Ipswich Wanderers in the next round and quickly made the 3 league difference count.

The match was four minutes old when Ollie Fraser broke into the right-hand side before cutting the ball back to Luke Ingram whose close range low shot was well blocked by Humphreys.

Five minutes later, MOTM Luke Ingram - who would later go onto equal Sam Newson's club record goals tally - broke the deadlock. Fraser was threaded through onto the right-hand side of the box to cross into the six yard box, picking out Jamie McGrath, the latter's looping header towards goal was headed off the line as far as Ingram at the far post, who poked home at point blank range - after initially having two efforts saved.

Ollie Fraser meanwhile saw a shot from point blank range held by Crowther, from Tevan Allen's left wing corner on 14 minutes, before the shot-stopper punched a cross in as far as Ingram, free on the edge of the box, whose ferocious low volley was deflected just wide of the bottom left-hand corner on 22 minutes.

McGrath met the resulting corner, but could only divert it narrowly over the crossbar.

Ingram again saw a low shot deflected just wide of the bottom near, right-hand, corner after a surging run 3 minutes later.

Allen found the forward with the resulting low corner, but his close range effort was blocked behind for another set-piece.

The Marketmen maintained their momentum, as great play from the home side saw Fraser thread Allen through down the right-hand side, where the latter's dangerous ball across the face of goal just evaded McGrath sliding in on 27 minutes.

The Reds had their reward just after the hour mark, as Needham doubled their advantage courtesy of a fine solo goal from Ben Hunter. The midfielder netted his second goal for the club, since signing in the summer, driving through the heart of the visitors defence, exploiting space on the right-hand side of the box before shifting the ball to open the angle to smash home into the bottom far corner.

Allen though blasted a shot over from inside the box on 34 minutes, before Needham scored the first of five goals in the final 10 minutes of the opening 45 minutes.

The clinical spell began in the 36th minute as Ollie Fraser released Jamie McGrath through on goal, whose dinked effort was smothered by the onrushing Crowther as far as Luke Ingram to find the vacant bottom right-hand corner.

Sandwiched in between that and his hat-trick, Ollie Fraser almost added a fourth goal a minute later. Hammond fed the winger in space just outside the box, who weaved inside before seeing a ferocious strike beaten away by Crowther.

Ingram however completed his hat-trick on the 40th minute, Allen set the forward through on goal, down the right-hand side, who smartly rounded the 'keeper before finding the vacant bottom far corner.

The hat-trick hero then hit a personal milestone with his fourth goal of the night, and Needham's fifth, less than sixty seconds later, as he equalled Sam Newson's all-time club goalscoring record of 134. Instinctively breaking through onto the left-hand side of the box before poking the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper into the bottom far corner.

Two minutes later, Tevan Allen added his name to the score-sheet with Needham's sixth goal in the 43rd minute. The midfielder exploited acres of space to shoot to cleverly find the bottom right-hand corner from 25-yards out.

A smart double save from Crowther, in the 45th minute, denied the hosts from inflicting further damage, firstly partying away McGrath's low shot down to his left-hand, near, post, before tipping behind Adam Mills' far post shot across to his opposite post, wide into the side-netting.

Needham however rounded off the first half with a seventh goal from the resulting corner. Allen's set-piece found Dan Morphew tower highest to head home off the inside of the near post.

Horlock's side made all 3 available substitutions at the interval, introducing Seth Chambers - who scored 10 goals in the competition last season - Dylan Williams and Ipswich Town loanee Nico Valentine in place of four goal hero Luke Ingram, Jake Dye and Tommy Smith.

Just twenty seconds after the restart, Needham quickly drew another important save from Crowther, who dived across low to his right-hand side to push a shot behind for a corner.

Williams saw a shot blocked inside the box, while Fraser's shot on the rebound was held by Crowther two minutes later, while Seth Chambers saw a shot from a yard out well held by Crowther on 53 minutes.

At the other end, Kyle Hammond was well placed to block substitute Josh Fenton Jones' close range shot behind for a corner, before Needham did have the ball in the net again in the hour mark.

Valentine drove through onto the right-hand byline to square a great ball across for Ollie Fraser to tap home from a yard out, but was ruled out for offside.

Needham did extend their advantage to 8-0 on 62 minutes, after a smart run and finish from Seth Chambers. The forward latched onto a great ball over the top to race through on goal, down the left-hand side - into the box, before cooly nutmegging Crowther to find the bottom far corner.

In quickfire fashion, Needham added a ninth goal six minutes later, a recycled Needham corner saw Dan Morphew fed into space on the edge of the box to turn effortlessly and fire home into the bottom left-hand corner.

At the other end though, an important save from Marcus Garnham preserved his side's clean sheet on 69 minutes, diving down to his left-hand side, after narrowing down the angle, to keep out Fenton Jones' shot on the edge of the box.

Two minutes later, good goalkeeping from Crowther saw the visiting goalkeeper well placed to hold onto Chambers' shot at point blank range from Fraser's squared ball, after a mazy run down the left wing.

The former went agonisingly close to scoring a brilliant overhead kick in the 77th minute, but saw his spectacular effort deflected just wide for a corner, off the outside of the right-hand post.

While Needham thundered a shot narrowly wide from the resulting corner, the hosts hit double figures with just over ten minutes remaining.

Jamie McGrath was threaded into space on the edge of the box to instinctively turn and curl home into the bottom right-hand corner, before Dan Morphew's chance at a hat-trick saw his long range low curled shot well held by Crowther at his far post in the 81st minute.

The Marketmen continued to dominate until the very end, making it 11-0 a minute later. Allen teed up Dylan Williams in space just outside the box to expertly find the bottom left-hand corner.

Chambers almost netted Needham's twelfth goal on 84 minutes, but for a good save from Crowther. Mills played the forward through down the left wing, and into the box, albeit his low shot across goal was tipped wide by the goalkeeper.

A minute later, Kyle Hammond again thwarted the away side with some excellent last ditch defending. Fenton Jones had rounded Garnham but was denied a shot at goal by the defender, tracking back to execute a perfect sliding challenge to clear the ball to safety.

As a result, Needham went back up the other end and rounded off the scoring. A low cutback on the right-hand side was pounced on by Nico Valentine to turn home at close range.

Although the scoring stopped there, Needham hit the post in the 87th minute, as Valentine latched onto a through-ball onto the right-hand side of the box before seeing his shot cannon back into play off the inside of the near post, falling to Mills unmarked at the far post who couldn't keep his first time shot down, with the goal gaping.

Needham saw another long range low shot well held by Crowther on 88 minutes, before Allen's right wing cross was creeping in, requiring the stopper to tip the ball just over his crossbar a minute later.

Needham will look to continue their fine form away to Chorley in the Vanarama National League North on Saturday (3pm, coach departs Bloomfields at 8am).
